Scieszka, Jon. Illustrated by Lane Smith. 1998. SQUIDS WILL BE SQUIDS. New York: Viking. ISBN: 0-670-88135-X.

Squids Will be Squids is an updated fable collection with morals concerning the everyday issues in kids' lives. The text is delivered in a sarcastic, "wink-wink" tone that the audience is sure to appreciate. Important lessons are learned involving homework, farts, and lip-waxing (!). Always funny, never patronizing, this book appeals to even the most reluctant reader.

The illustrations bring yet another level of fun to the book as they give personality to even the most unlikely of creatures. One can even begin to imagine the type of relationship that the author and illustrator share when they read the dedication, "For me to know -J.S.; For you to find out -L.S." Their antics continue beyond the body of the work to the front flap and introduction, where the readers are assured they can gossip about anyone as long as they change their names to animal names.

For the recommended age for the book, the reader sees "Ages 49-630 (in dog years)". On the bottom of the information page, the reader is again regaled with snappy comments, followed by the moral, "Simon Says, Dont forget to read the fine print". This book doesn't just make jokes, but includes the reader in them. Squids Will be Squids is a joy to read and a joy to share with others.
