More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
is
a collection consisting of traditional as well as more modern folklore. This book contains scary stories, funny-scary stories,
and scary songs. Twenty-eight short selections make up this much-loved book in the Scary Stories series. The text is
spooky and sometimes scary without ever getting inappropriately gory.
While interesting to read silently, these stories beg to be told around the camp
fire, by flashlight at a slumber party, or at the very least read aloud. The reader may recognize some of these stories as
something that happened in their town or "just one town over". These are stories readers (and listeners) remember and share
with their friends and families.
Schwartz's retellings are never verbose, making it easier for readers to become the
storytellers themselves. In my fourth grade classroom, copies of the Scary Stories collection never touched the library
shelves as they were checked out by one student after another. During inside recess one day, I observed a group of children
gathered around a girl who read from the pages of Mr. Schwartz's book with the utmost seriousness. Wherever this occurs, screams
and giggles are sure to follow.
