Oodgeroo. Illustrated by Bronwyn Bancroft. 1994. DREAMTIME: ABORIGINAL STORIES. New York: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Books.
ISBN: 0-688-13296-0.

Dreamtime is a collection that includes folklore from the Aboriginal oral tradition as well as stories from Oodgeroo's own life. The Aboriginal people have a rich and varied heritage which is brought to light in this well written and beautifully illustrated work. In the section titled "Stories from the Old and New Dreamtime", Oodgeroo shares traditional stories as well as new tales written in the traditional format. Readers journey through the creation of the earth, explanations of constellations and nature, and moral-themed stories as well. Much of the lore concerns itself with how the Australian land came to have its many wonders.

The first section of the book, "Stories from Stradbroke," takes the reader on a journey through Oodgeroo's life as an Aborigine in a white man's world. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but always authentic, these tales give the reader a window into the real-life struggles and achievements of more modern Aboriginal families. The illustrations in this book are mind-boggling. Done in a traditional Aboriginal style, the art is colorful, vibrant, alive. One can become lost in the illustrations with their hypnotic shapes and colors. Upon learning that the artist's work is shown in galleries, I found myself trying to seek out more of her art. Dreamtime's stories are beautiful, and the art represents a new level of abstract wonder.
