Simon, Seymour. 2001. ANIMALS NOBODY LOVES. New York: SeaStar Books. ISBN: 1-58717-079-5.

ANIMALS NOBODY LOVES is a brief overview of the world's most feared and hated animals.  After a short introduction, each animal is introduced in a two-page spread.  The different spreads are set on very colorful backgrounds and at least one whole page is devoted to a full-color photograph of the animal.

Seymour Simon is a very well-respected author of nonfiction works.  He is known for his accuracy and his ability to make his topics interesting for the reader.  In this book, each animal is descibed briefly in two to four paragraphs.  Simon includes interesting facts such as the fact that a young cockroach can fit through a crack the width of a dime and that a piranha bite can cut through bone.  He also provides comparisons to help readers gain perspective like the fact that a shark can bite three hundred times harder than a human.

The format is very easy to follow and condusive to browsing.  On the first read-through, the reader may not even be able to get past the pictures.  Amazingly sharp and colorful, the pictures show the animals in great detail.  The large size of the pictures on the page and the close-up style of photography makes examining the photos half the fun.  Vultures and hyenas rip flesh from carcasses.  A rattlesnake's open mouth fills a whole page.  Cockroaches are so big and so close that you can see the hairs on their legs.  The reader may not even be able to touch that particular page!  This book is SURE to be a hit with curious children everywhere.
