Appelt, Kathi. Illustrated by Arthur Howard. 2002. BUBBA AND BEAU, BEST FRIENDS. San Diego: Harcourt. ISBN: 0-15-202060-8.

Bubba and Beau, Best Friends is the story of a baby and a dog who share a love for their blankie and a disdain for washing.  The reader is introduced to Bubba and Beau and their families in a succinct but fun way, with the illustrations helping the story move along.  The artist uses a cartoon-style art very effective for the mood of this book.  As Bubba's mother and father kiss him, his face shows a perfect baby scowl.

Bubba and Beau have a lot in common, and more than anything, they love their blankie.  The blankie, by the way, is pink.  The reader may assume that Bubba's parents would be sticklers for gender roles from the start, what with the cowboy hat, boot, and the big truck.  But lo and behold, it seems that Bubba's parents are more laid back than one might think!  One day, Mama Pearl launders the blankie as well as Bubba and Beau, much to their dismay.  But in "Bubbaville", all will end well as the two best friends and their blankie reunite, clean as ever.

The writing has a kind of Texas "twang" that makes the reader feel like a part of the story.  The flow of this book begs to be read aloud.  The reader is even directly addressed in lines such as, "Sister, that blankie was just right."  The illustrations also come across as friendly and approachable in their simplicity.  My kindergarten age friend could not resist pointing out Bubba's toes everywhere they appeared.  This is a book to read aloud for its style and for the enjoyment of all.
